Destin-Fort Walton Breach, FL, United States (AHN) – TSA security officers at Florida’s Destin-Fort Walton Beach airport patted down a 95-year-old cancer stricken woman and ordered her to remove her adult diaper. The incident occurred on June 18. Jane Weber, traveling from Florida to Michigan with her ill mother in the final stages of a battle of leukemia, said she believed the officers may have acted according to protocol, but that procedures need to be changed. TSA officers said the Depends diaper Weber’s mother was wearing was “wet and firm,” and they needed to thoroughly check it. Weber and her mother then went to the bathroom to remove the underwear. Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News
Paranaque, Metro Manila, Philippines (AHN) – The Manila International Airport Authority, which operates the Philippines’ international gateway, is looking for body scanners to enhance the airport’s security systems. However, the company is searching for x-ray machines that would not show the human body outline because of the conservative nature of many Filipino travelers when it comes to the issue. Vicente Guerzon Jr., assistant general manager for security and emergency services of the authority, said that if they find such a body scanner, they will install it at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport by the end of the year. Aside from addressing the privacy concern, the authority wants to ensure that the body [...] Continue Reading…

Durban, South Africa (IRIN) – In 1998, HIV/AIDS activist Gugu Dlamini was beaten to death near KwaMashu township outside Durban after publicly disclosing her HIV-positive status. Her death, an example of the depth of HIV stigma, shook South Africa. Dlamini’s death almost destroyed her daughter, Mandisa, who was just 13 years old when her mother died. Now 25, Mandisa spoke about her experience as part of this year’s Nkosi Johnson memorial lecture, named for South Africa’s youngest HIV activist who died in 2001, at the SA AIDS 2011 Conference. “Most of you know Gugu Dlamini as a hero, who came out about her HIV status. You don’t know the real Gugu Dlamini, you don’t know her life as [...] Continue Reading…

RAFAH (IRIN) – Tarik Abu Kheir, a construction worker in his mid-thirties, moved two years ago from the Egyptian Nile Delta governorate of Beheira to the Egyptian side of Rafah, a town straddling the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, because there was money to be made digging illegal tunnels. “I had nothing to do back in my village… Some of my friends preceded me here and kept talking about the huge money they earned digging tunnels. This was why I came,” he said. Abu Kheir earned the equivalent of US$50 an hour and sent the money to his parents back in Beheira so they could build him a home. The pay was high, he added, [...] Continue Reading…

Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – US Treasury officials confirmed plans to sell its remaining 6 percent share of US automaker Chrysler Group LLC to Italian automaker Fiat for $500 million, which represents about 98,461 shares of stock. The sale will give Fiat a majority 52 percent share of the Detroit company whose automotive lines include Jeep. In addition, the sale ends the federal government’s relationship with Chrysler that began with a bailout to rescue the automaker from bankruptcy in 2009. However, the deal is still expected to leave taxpayers with a $1.3 billion loss. Chrysler received $12.5 billion in emergency loans from the US Treasury and still briefly entered bankruptcy [...] Continue Reading…
