There are both well-known and lesser-known examples of plastic surgery addiction among celebrities and socialites today. One notable example that most people know about (and consider an addicted person) is Michael Jackson. Another notable example is Cindy Jackson. Cindy Jackson is also known as the human Barbie doll. She has had over 47 plastic surgery procedures and has significantly altered her appearance over the years to look more like Barbie.

One of the most infamous individuals who seems addicted to plastic surgery is the socialite Jocelyn Wildenstein. She is famous for getting repeated surgeries to look like a large cat. She has even noted that recent surgeries to expand her cheekbone area have caused limitations to her peripheral vision.

What Causes Plastic Surgery Addiction?

The underlying disease which doctors think is the cause of most plastic surgery addictions is called Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). BDD is a psychological disorder which causes individuals afflicted by it to consider themselves, or part of their bodies, to be ugly or deformed. This disease is considered to be closely related to excessive compulsive disorder and anorexia.

Sadly, regardless of how many plastic surgeries a person afflicted with this disorder receives, they do not see their body image as improving. As this is a psychological disorder, it cannot be treated through cosmetic surgery and must be treated with help from a psychologist.

What to Look For

There are several things that family members and doctors can look for when trying to identify a person that has an addiction to plastic surgery, or the underlying disorder of BDD. First of all, a person with these types of afflictions will have a very negative opinion of how they look and low self-esteem. This negative opinion does not seem to improve even with reassurances from those around them. This obsession is also long-lasting.

Another sign of these disorders is the vast number of surgeries the person wants to get or has received in the past. He or she may also have very unrealistic views of what plastic surgery can do and may be very disappointed in the results after the plastic surgery has been completed.

A person who is afflicted with BDD may also have a difficult time leaving his or her home or feeling comfortable in social gatherings. The person will likely have an obsession that people are looking at the physical trait or traits person is paranoid about.

It is possible that a cosmetic improvement in one spouse may result in a “honeymoon period” when the relationship feels happier after one spouse has his or her appearance improved. But putting the responsibility of saving a marriage onto a nose job or liposuction will pretty much always result in disappointment for both spouses eventually.

Think about it: do you really want to be married to someone whose happiness depends on your having Barbie doll figure? Because if it does, they’re probably a pretty shallow person. There is nothing wrong with wanting to look our best, but when it comes to plastic surgery, it should be a personal decision, not an answer to a spousal request or a gambit to save a crumbling marriage. If you are in the situation of having a spouse who wants you to change your appearance through plastic surgery, think about what could happen. Maybe you’d have liposuction, and your spouse liked the results, but then he suggests getting breast augmentation. After that he might suggest a nose job. Can you see how sick and wrong this is? It’s one thing to want your spouse to dress nice and keep relatively fit, but wanting a partner to undergo surgery to change their appearance is an issue of control and insecurity.

The way to reconcile a troubled marriage and plastic surgery is to deal with them separately. The marriage itself should be priority number one, and you may require couples’ counseling or individual counseling to resolve the issues that are troubling your marriage. If you’re able to do this to achieve a stronger marriage, then maybe you can think about having plastic surgery to alter your appearance. Plastic surgery should be a personal decision and should not be prompted by wanting to please another person – even if the changes do end up pleasing that other person.

There is no doubt that plastic surgery often improves a person’s self esteem, particularly if they have fretted about a less-than-perfect body part for a number of years. It can be empowering to look in the mirror and think to yourself, “Wow. I have an awesome nose.” But that sense of empowerment and self esteem won’t be there if you look in the mirror and think, “Now that I had augmentation surgery, all that Brad cares about is making me wear low cut tops, particularly if we’re going out on a weekend.” Doesn’t the rest of me matter?” Plastic surgery should only be undertaken after serious consideration, and a troubled marriage is not a good reason to choose plastic surgery.

Plastic surgery can make you the prettiest face in the world but still end up lonely and sad in the inside. Learn from the lives of celebrities. Some of them have the worst kind of life. All too often that some of them suffer from failed marriages and personal problems.

Being beautiful doesn’t mean life will get easier. Our lives are too complicated. Don’t hope for cosmetic surgery to magically zap your problems away. Your appearance won’t solve the problem in global warming, poverty, and war. The effects of plastic surgery are mostly superficial.
